For UP to actively participate in the internationalization/globalization arena well-prepared, ready for productive and beneficial partnership/engagement, the present administration through the Office of International Linkages (OIL), Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) spearheaded the following programs: University of the Philippines’ Mobility for Vigor and Excellence (MOVE UP) and Continuous Operational and Outcomes-based Partnership for Excellence in Research and Academic Training Enhancement (COOPERATE), Research/Creative Work Presentation in International Conferences (Travel Grants), UP System and Constituent Unit (CU) Hosted International Conferences, and World Expert Lecture Series. These programs were approved by the Board of Regents during its 1298th meeting on 30 June 2014 with appropriate budgetary requirements.
1. University of the Philippines’ Mobility for Vigor and Excellence (MOVE UP)
The MOVE UP program has been realized starting 2014 as a support for undergraduate mobility. This program offers financial assistance (full or partial based on socialized tuition system) to UP undergraduate students with high scholastic record to take courses or undertake sandwich thesis research work in international HEIs for one semester.
2. Continuous Operational and Outcomes-based Partnership for Excellence in Research and Academic Training Enhancement (COOPERATE)
COOPERATE aims to promote the development of research/creative manpower and productivity of the University through research cooperation and academic training in areas needed by the country with partner universities in the ASEAN and other regions. It aspires for the increase in number of MS and PhD graduation of young Filipino faculty/researchers in areas/fields most needed in the country through advisorship/co-advisorship with experts in partner foreign universities and encourage research/creative productivity through active cooperation between UP and partner universities. Funding, which includes travel expenses, accommodation and living expenses, has been provided to the qualified graduate student and his/her adviser.
3. Research/Creative Work Presentation in International Conferences (Travel Grant)
Participation in international conferences has been further enhanced through the Research/Creative Work Presentation in International Conferences Program. Grants amounting to PhP 40,000.00 for those presenting papers in Asia (excluding South Asia and the Pacific Islands) and PhP 80,000.00 in North and South America, Europe and Russia, Middle East, Africa, India, Australia). These travel grants have been awarded to UP artists/scientists/researchers/scholars and graduate students.
4. UP System Supported Constituent Unit Hosting of International Conferences
The University has been involved in the improvement of the understanding by the UP community (and other Philippine HEIs) of the value of internationalization (internalization) through the hosting of international conferences and workshop. Through the UP System Supported Constituent Unit Hosting of International Conferences, additional funds for materials and other operating expenses needed for hosting international conferences have been provided to UP CUs.
5. World Expert Lecture Series
Filipino or foreign world experts/leaders/artists from the academe, government and industry are invited to give special lectures/performance in UP in large highly publicized convocations or conferences to further expose and inspire students, faculty and staff. This has been done through the World Experts Lecture Series (WELS) program, wherein financial assistance for air travel expenses, accommodation, and per diem of the world expert and arrangements including publicity and social functions for the convocation are granted to the CU host/proponent (faculty/REPs).
