Prof. Roland Goertz visited the University of the Philippines last February 16-22, 2024 to work on the syllabus for a Chemical Safety and Security course, which will be offered this mid-year in the Institute of Chemistry, University of the Philippines Diliman.
The class will focus on pyrophoric materials and fire safety. Prof. Goertz is the chair of the Chemical Safety and Fire Defense at the University of Wuppertal. He is considered a world-renowned expert on fire disasters. His research interest is in the mitigation and control of fires due to Li batteries.
He is one of those rare academics who actually practice what they teach in the classroom, having been involved in various investigations on fire disasters all over the world. The visit of Dr. Goertz was supported by the Erasmus program, and he is expected to advise the UP CBRNE TWG in its journey to establishing a CBRNE Center for Excellence.
