12th International Conference “ASIAN Community Knowledge Networks for the Economy, Society, Culture, and Environmental Stability”

The University of the Philippines through the Office of International Linkages together with the Chiang Rai Rajabhat University, Thailand will be co-hosting the 12th International Conference entitled “ASIAN Community Knowledge Networks for the Economy, Society, Culture, and Environmental Stability” on 6 to 11 June 2016 at the Century Park Hotel & University of the Philippines.

One of the objectives of the conference is to bring together researchers, scholars, experts and practitioners, Non Government Organizations, members of the academic community, government and intergovernmental organizations for an exchange of ideas and views and to develop a mutual understanding with regard to issues on development facing the countries of the Asia-Pacific, the Greater Mekong Sub-region as well as ASEAN Community.

In this regard, we are calling interested individuals to attend the said conference on June 07 at the Century Park Hotel and 08 June at National Institute of Physics, UP Diliman. Note that there is no registration fee. Interested individuals must send accomplished Pre-registration form on or before 30 May 2016. We will ​send via email ​the acceptance of selected participants.

Sophia University has established the Science and Technology Exchange Committee (STEC) to promote science and technology interchange with academic institutions in Asia. One of the programs geared toward promoting such academic exchanges includes the “SOPHIA LECTURING – RESEARCH GRANT.”

Application Period: For Academic Year 2017 (01 April 2017 – 31 March  2018)
Deadline for submission of application: 31 May 2016
Notification of Results: September 2016

1. The applicant must hold the rank of full-time professor, associate professor, assistant professor, researcher, or assistant at a four-year university.
2. The applicant must specialize in one of the following fields: engineering, mathematics, or natural sciences.
3. The applicant must present a detailed plan of research at Sophia Unviersity.

Terms and Conditions of Grants:
1. The grant is for a consecutive period of no longer than three months in the academic year (01 April to 31 March of the following year).
2. Stipend (with tax):

  • 5,000 yen per day for Visiting Professor or Visiting Associate Professor
  • 5,000 yen per day for Visiting Lecturer or Visiting Assistant Professor
  • 4,000 yen per day for Visiting Researcher or Visiting Assistant

3. Fre housing is provided at the University’s guest house. *Free housing is available only to the grantee.
4. Expenses for travel to and from Japan, as well as for travel within Japan, shall not be paid by Sophia University.

University of the Philippines Mobility for Vigor and Excellence (MOVE UP)

The “University of the Philippines Mobility for Vigor and Excellence (MOVE UP) Program,” provides support for travel and living expenses to UP undergraduate students who wish to take courses in partner foreign universities as exchange students.

Deadline: The deadline for the CUs to submit the list of their nominations/recruits for selection by the System MOVE UP Committee for the First Semester School Year 2016-2017 August to December exchange is 15 May 2016.

AUN-KU Joint Supervision Single Master’s Degree Programme

The ASEAN University Network-Kyoto University (AUN-KU) is now calling for applications for the Joint Supervision Single Master’s Degree Programme.

The Joint Supervision Single Master’s Degree Programme offers master’s degree students from AUN Member Universities (i.e. University of the Philippines) an opportunity to conduct research and complete a thesis under the joint supervision of professors from their home university and from Kyoto University in 3 related fields: “Food and Water Resources,” “Environment and Energy,” and “Public Health.”

The research work at Kyoto University must start after 1 June 2016 end before 28 February 2017. The duration of stay in Kyoto should be 3-6 months. Submission of application to the AUN Secretariat is required to be at least four months prior to the desired start of their stay in Kyoto.

The University of Tokyo Global Japan Studies Summer Program

The University of Tokyo is now calling for applications for the “The University of Tokyo Global Japan Studies Summer Program” to be held on 24 August to 02 September 2016.

In this ten-day intensive program, participants will be immersed in a interdisciplinary academic lectures (in humanities, social sciences, and engineering) and talks by eminent public figures with illustrative life stories, as well as carefully planned field trips in Tokyo and surrounding areas. Through a well-designed combination of on- and off-campus study, the program challenges participants to both critically analyze and actually experience specifically identified sociological and technological issues, such as sustainable urban planning and social stratification in relation to pop culture. These issues are key for understanding not only Japan’s postwar itself but also the larger world to which Japan is closely connected and of which Japan is intrinsically a part. Prominent professors like Professors. Shunya Yoshimi, Yasuo Kobayashi, and Akihiko Tanaka will lecture in this flagship program.

Eligible applicants are undergraduate students whose cumulative GWA at the moment of application is 1.70 or better. English proficiency is required if not native English speaker, and basic Japanese knowledge (equivalent to Level N5 of Japanese Language Proficiency Test, or completion of a first-year Japanese language course).

Tuition and fees amount to JPY 250,000 (inclusive of accommodation, lunches and refreshments, coffee breaks, and fieldtrip expenses, exclusive of participants’round-trip air fare). Please refer to the program website for detailed instructions on how to make payment.

Financial aid will be given to selected students (JPY 80,000 each) by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). Scholarship will be provided to awardees in cash at the beginning of the program.
