Quezon City, Philippines – The University of the Philippines (UP) and the National Taipei University (NTPU) convened an exploratory meeting via Zoom to discuss potential collaborations in academic and research engagements. The discussion centered on sustainability, social sciences, business, and open distance learning, with both institutions expressing keen interest in forging stronger international partnerships.

The meeting was attended by representatives from UP’s Office of International Linkages (OIL), Ms. Margaret Jarmin Suarez, PDA for Linkages of UP Open University, Dr. Dennis Sumaylo, OIL Coordinator for UP Mindanao, and Dr. Kelly Agra, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of nUP Baguio, along with key officials from NTPU’s Office of International Affairs (OIA). The discussions built upon previous engagements at the APAIE 2024 Conference in Perth, Australia, where initial conversations on joint initiatives were established.

Among the key presentations was the Master of Arts in Social Development Studies (MASDS) program at UP Baguio, introduced by Assistant Vice Chancellor Kelly Agra. The MASDS program provides a multidisciplinary approach to social development, integrating perspectives from social sciences, humanities, and public policy. AVC Agra emphasized the program’s focus on research, policy analysis, and community engagement, highlighting opportunities for international collaboration through research initiatives, faculty exchanges, and student mobility programs. These align with NTPU’s academic expertise in social sciences, business, and public administration.

UP representatives also outlined various institutional funding opportunities and internationalization programs that could support joint initiatives with NTPU. Dr. Peter Kwok-Fai Law, Senior Consultant of NTPU’s Office of International Affairs, highlighted NTPU’s international partnerships, research centers, and academic programs, underscoring the university’s interest in student and faculty exchanges.

To formalize the collaboration, both institutions agreed to pursue a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and schedule a virtual signing ceremony. Further discussions will be held to refine opportunities for student exchanges, joint research projects, and faculty collaborations. With a shared commitment to academic excellence and international engagement, the partnership between UP and NTPU is expected to enhance cross-border learning experiences and contribute to global knowledge production.
